Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Overcomes Obstacles to Keep On Chugging
If there was ever a real-life story similar to the 'Little Engine That Could,' the story would be that of the obstacles experienced by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad this summer.
The obstacles for the railway are not economic, they have plenty of people wanting to take the incredible ride from Durango to Silverton and back.
The obstacles come from bad weather which has made the tracks impassable not once, but twice within weeks of each other.
The first, a flash flood following a heavy downpour on July 17, covered the tracks with debris which railroad workers cleared within days. Another storm and flooding on Tuesday (July 24) have made a section of the track unusable.
Just like the engine in the story, this little train company has the same mantra going from 'I think I can' to 'I know I can' when faced with an obstacle.
Rather than shut down, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad will bus visitors past the damaged track and give them a ride through what many, including myself, know as the most incredible part of the journey.
