WINNER: Colorado Had the Lowest Temp in the Nation This Morning
Way to go, Colorado. We recorded the coldest temperature in the contiguous Unites States this morning.
After a week of blistering temperatures, followed immediately by rain and temperatures all over the chart, we finally got down to business and set a low temp.
Lowest Temperature In The Contiguous 48 States
According to the National Weather Service's awesome Weather Prediction Center, the lowest temperature for the morning of Monday, June 28, 2021, was set at Berthoud Pass, Colorado. This mornings temperature was recorded at a brisk 30 degrees.
A Little Info About Berthoud Pass
According to Wikipedia, Berthoud Pass "...provides a high route between upper Clear Creek Canyon to the upper valley of the Fraser River in Middle Park to the north. The pass traverses the continental divide at the Front Range, on the border between Clear Creek County and Grand County."
Berthoud's Climate
Berthoud Pass has an extreme alpine subarctic climate, bordering on an alpine climate. The average annual snowfall is 391.2 inches.
Cold, But Better Than The Alternative
While 30 degrees is a bit chilly, especially when you take into account it's late June, it's certainly better than the alternative. We could have experienced the nation's highest temperature.
The same site, the National Weather Service, reports the highest recorded temperature for the contiguous United States for the date of Sunday, June 27, could be found in Death Valley. The residents of Death Valley, all 320 of them, (yes, I looked it up) found themselves roasting away at 122 degrees.
Right on, Colorado. We're wrapping up the month of June in style. We've gone from recording setting heat to snow to having the coldest temperature in the nation in a matter of days.
