One of the first things my family and I were excited to do when we arrived in Colorado a year ago was to explore some new ghost towns. Over the past year, we've managed to hit a couple of spooky spots, but this was our first legitimate stop in a ghost town here. And it was pretty awesome.

One of the first (and closest) places we heard about and wanted to see first was Dearfield, which sits just off Route 34 about 25 minutes or so east of Greeley.

There's been a recent push for restoration of the town to preserve its unique history that's included some generous donations from PDC Energy in the amount of $15,000 and Occidental Petroleum who chimed in with $7,500.

We're super excited for Halloween in our house and are huge fans of all things haunted, so I got in the car with my six-year-old, grabbed some snacks, and hit the road toward Dearfield. From where we were in Loveland, it was about a 50-minute drive and worth every mile. There were some boarded-up places, but also a couple of buildings that were open and waiting to be explored. So we did, and it was CREEPY.

The little man was actually braver than me. I got the willies as soon as I walked in the door. I wasn't really knowing what to expect or feel when I got there, but I have to admit, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up the second I stepped foot there. Now, as for my kid, he didn't want to leave and actually asked if we could camp out there. THAT was a big fat no. If you love ghost towns and haunted things, I highly recommend Dearfield.

Here are a few of the pics we took while we were there. Enjoy.
