Caution: Colorado Moose Attacks On the Rise
You don't hear a lot about them, but moose attacks in Colorado do happen, and they are happening more frequently.
The moose is Colorado's largest wild mammal, standing as high as 6 feet tall and tipping the scale at around 1,000 pounds. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know these creatures can do some serious damage when they want to.
There are currently some 2,500 moose in Colorado and that number is going up. Colorado Parks & Wildlife says conflicts between humans and moose are increasing, and so they have created this video to offer some tips and advice on avoiding a catastrophic confrontation.
Here are some important things to keep in mind when it comes to moose.
- Maintain a safe distance. A selfie with a moose is a bad idea.
- Don't think because a moose isn't afraid of you that you can walk right up to it.
- You can not outrun a moose, so don't try.
- Keep dogs away from moose. The dog will only aggravate the moose.
- Always yield the right-of-way to a moose on a road or trail. Stay calm and be patient.
Moose are majestic animals, but they can definitely present a danger if they are provoked or feel threatened. For your protection and theirs, enjoy moose from a distance, and heed this good advice from Colorado Parks & Wildlife.
