On Wednesday (May 8) at 12:45 p.m. the Grand Junction Fire Department responded to reports of a fire near Las Colonias Park.

Firefighters located blaze and found it limited to a small island in the middle of the Colorado River.

Since the fire wasn't a threat to buildings or vegetation other than the brush growing on the island, the GJFD, Wildland Fire Team, and the Fire Marshal decided to allow the fire to continue to burn.

Fire officials are monitoring the island and if conditions change, crews are on standby to quickly respond to the area.

While the cause of this fire is unknown, the Grand Junction Fire Department says because of the dry and windy conditions even a cigarette tossed out the window of a vehicle or a spark from machinery or tools can start a fast spreading fire.
