Grand Junction boasts 33 developed parks providing great recreational opportunities for residents but there are five things you can't do at Grand Junction's city parks.

Residents of Grand Junction are so blessed to have so many great parks for picnics, walks, kiddie playtime, and various forms of recreation. You can do so many fun things at our parks from tennis and pickleball to horseshoes and softball. They are well taken care of, and they get a lot of use, but I wonder if everyone knows the rules?

If everyone knows the rules and follows the rules it makes everything so much better for everyone. There are so many things you can do in our parks, but, for everyone's benefit, here are five things you can't do in Grand Junction city parks.

Yes, it is a public place and yes you are outdoors, but smoking is not permitted at any of Grand Junction's parks. I'm not a smoker, but I am just now discovering this rule. I understand it completely. There are a lot of people around, or others on the trail you pass, and nobody should be subjected to unwelcomed secondhand smoke.

Lots of pet owners like to take their dog for a walk in the park. And, I'm confident that they all clean up any mess their Fido may create. But, some dog owners like to let their dogs run free, but that my friends, is a violation of park rules. While I know it's not the greatest option, the dog park at Canyon View is where the dogs can run free and wild.

No glass containers are allowed at city parks. It's pretty much a no-brainer. Glass bottle breaks. Kid steps on glass. Kid cuts foot. It's a bad, bad scene. So, no bottles, and, by the way, only 3.2 beer is permitted, although soda and water is actually an option as well.

YOU CAN'T BE THERE AFTER 10:30

Most of the parks close at 10:30 p.m. That means you can't hang out there after 10:30 and you certainly can't sleep there. Clearly, late-night park loitering can be more of a problem in the summertime when the weather is nice and people tend to stay out later. But, just remember the 10:30 p.m. rule.

    YOU CAN'T PLAY GOLF

Grand Junction has a couple of public golf courses and two driving ranges. That's where you go to play golf, not the nearest park. Although, you probably aren't going to hurt anyone if you're out smacking a few plastic practice balls, the potential for damaging the turf looms large. The last thing we want in our beautiful parks is a bunch of divots created by some hacker. That's what your backyard is for, as well as the driving ranges.
