You'd think that being officially 3 years post-COVID shutdowns, we'd start to see more openings than closings but so far in 2023, that doesn't seem to be the case. Small local businesses, and big national chains, just appear to be the theme so far this year. And now, another 19 local stores get added to the list.

If you've ever skied up in Aspen, Snowmass Village, or Telluride, you've likely had to pop by a sporting goods store for some gear or extra winter clothing at some point. Those location options are now going to be fewer and farther between following this year's ski and snowboard season.

This past month, a subsidiary of Vail Resorts, SSI Venture Inc, notified Colorado that they would be closing the 19 stores across the three Colorado mountain towns. That list includes 7 Aspen Sports stores, 6 Telluride Sports stores, 1 Burton, 1 Neve Sports store, 2 North Face stores, and 2 Patagonia stores. In a press release, SSI spokeswoman, Laura Bonfiglio, had the following to say regarding the massive closures.

While saddened to see these Vail Resorts-owned franchises leave Snowmass Village, the Town is looking forward to the opportunity for more local businesses to occupy the vacated storefronts. These locations on the Snowmass Mall have wonderful visibility from the thousands of pedestrians that visit annually during the ski and summer seasons and special events.

I guess that's one glass-half-full way to look at it. Maybe this does create an opportunity for new local businesses to take over the space and do something special with them. Only time will tell...
