More ‘Western Slope Honor Flight’ Memories
Between 2009 and 2011, I had the pleasure of joining our World War II veterans for three of the five Western Slope Honor Flights from Grand Junction, Colorado, to Washington DC. Here's another pictorial look back, accompanied by some sound clips from the vets and guardians on the flights.
Upon landing at the airport in Baltimore, the World War II vets were greeted at the gate by active military personnel.
On the first Western Slope Honor Flight, upon arrival at the Pacific Gate of the World War II Memorial, the vets were greeted by Senator Bob Dole.
After entering the memorial through the Pacific gate, the vets and guardians had a few moments to explore before posing for a group photo.
Photographers from the Daily Sentinel and Western Colorado television news channels accompanied the vets on the flight to record the event.
Following the group photo, the vets and guardians had a chance to enjoy a little time to reflect.
