The Colorado Mesa University Maverick Basketball teams ended the weekend at Colorado Christian University, and it was an unhappy ending. The nationally ranked Lady Mavericks lost for the first time this season, and the men fell for the fifth time. The Women's team is ranked #4 in the USA Today WBCA Division II poll. The CMU women continued their perfect season Friday night in a back and forth game against the always tough Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines. The Lady Mavs extended their perfect start to 18 games winning 64-51 in the early game Friday night. CMU led 33-27 at half, scoring the final six points of the first half to break a 27-27 tie with two and a half minutes remaining. Three consecutive layups by the Mavericks gave them the largest lead of the first half. The win made the Lady Mavericks one of only four Division II women's team that were undefeated, and the only team west of the Mississippi. The men's basketball team also came out on top against the Orediggers, but it took them an overtime session to get the job done. The Mavericks lead at halftime 35-20 after a big run put them 15 points in front. The Orediggers caught the Mavericks at the end, tying the game at 61, pushing the game to OT where the CMU men finished off the Orediggers 77-74.

The teams moved across the Mile High Metro area to Lakewood to play Colorado Christian University on Saturday night. It was here the things turned sour for the Mavericks. The women's basketball team started strong against CCU and it looked like it would be a runaway, but the team cooled off and the women of CCU heated up catching CMU at halftime making it 36-35 with CMU holding a 1 point lead. The Lady Mavs struggled the entire second half, falling behind by double digits late in the game and the rally to win never materialized. The Lady Cougars handed the Mavericks their first loss of the 2012-2013 season winning 77-73 giving the women's team an 18-1 record and 14-1 in RMAC standings. The CMU men's team did not even start their game strong, struggling the entire first half, falling behind 40-25 at halftime. They fared better in the beginning of the second half going on a 15-8 run to cut down the CCU Cougars lead to single digits. The turnovers caused the Mavericks to fall further behind losing 83-65. That drops their record to 14-5 overall and 11-4 in the RMAC standings.
