One Grand Junction health club is facing the mask mandate (pun intended) by changing things up. This gym is going to take it outside.

Earlier this morning, Wednesday, July 22, the Grand Junction location for Mesa Fitness held the 5:15 Body Combat group fitness class in the parking lot. It was quickly followed by a Sh'Bam class at 6:15. The announcement of these early outdoor classes was posted yesterday on Mesa Fitness' Facebook page:

With the new mask mandate, we are changing things up. We are going to be offering OUTDOOR CLASSES at our Grand Junction location! Join us for some outdoor fun!

Tomorrow's (Thursday, July 23) schedule features early morning classes held outdoors including:

  • 5:15 a.m. - Sprint
  • 6:15 a.m. - RPM
  • 7:25 a.m. - Sprint

Please note: Only some classes have been moved outdoors. The majority of group fitness classes will continue to be conducted inside the gym.

If you head to the Mesa Fitness location at 700 Maldonado Way in Grand Junction, you'll find a large, fairly unused parking area on the east side of the building. I've been a member at this gym for over a year and had no idea that the parking area was there.

If you're a member of the gym and would like to participate in these outdoor classes, you are asked to check-in at the front counter per normal, and then head outside to join the class. You will be required to wear a mask at the beginning of class, and social distancing protocols must be observed.

I spent several years working in the health club industry and always felt hosting outdoor group fitness classes would be an excellent draw for gym members. Most gyms have ample unused parking spaces. Let's face it, this is Western Colorado, home to the best "outdoors" in the nation. Why not enjoy the great scenery and fresh air?

In case you're wondering, at 5:53 this morning it was 77 degrees in Grand Junction with a light breeze and 29% humidity.

I wouldn't be surprised if other gyms don't follow suit in the near future. If I were still managing a gym, this would seem a proper course of action. Why not check out one of these classes?
