Wednesday was National Gingerbread House Day, and let it never be said that we Coloradans don’t take our holidays seriously. But if I’m being honest, the real MVPs in our state for this day of gingerbread were the folks at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. This year is their 100th anniversary, and boy, did they decide to go HARD.

The Broadmoor has always been what one could call ‘extra’ when it comes to the holidays, as in past years they’ve built a gingerbread mansion, a twelve-foot-tall gingerbread chapel, and one year, a giant gingerbread Santa train. So, yeah. There had to be at least some expectation that their gingerbread house was going to be ridiculous in the best kind of way and they did not disappoint.

This year, the main confection was a 13.5 foot-tall, 120-square-foot gingerbread copy of the original 1918 Broadmoor Resort, all on display in the second-floor lobby.  According to a report by 9 News, it took months of planning, 220 hours of baking and decorating, 10 chefs and 2 carpenters to create the edible (ish) masterpiece, which will be on display until the first week of January. All told, the miniaturized resort was made from:

  • 958 lbs of powdered sugar
  • 475 lbs of flour
  • 650 eggs
  • 19 lbs of holiday spices
  • 200 lbs of honey
  • 128 lbs of molasses
  • 6 lbs of salt
  • 78 lbs of assorted candy, gumballs, and fruit jellies
  • 164 lbs of dark chocolate
  • 89 lbs of butter
  • 3 lbs of baking soda
  • 10 lbs of heavy cream
  • 2 lbs of fresh yeast

There’s a lot there. Which I think can best be appreciated by watching this time lapse of the baked goods bonanza.

If you’d like to visit this delicious monstrosity, the hotel grounds are open to the public until 2 pm from December 21st-January 1st, and the hotel itself is at 1 Lake Ave, Colorado Springs.
