Michael McDonald plans to snap a lengthy drought between studio albums with the release of his ninth solo LP later this year.

Titled Wide Open and scheduled to arrive on Sept. 15, the former Doobie Brother's new set marks his first full-length effort since Soul Speak in 2008 and his first release of new material since Unfinished Business, the EP he released in conjunction with guitarist Robben Ford in 2013. As McDonald recently told Noisey, the record's long gestation helped produce one of his more eclectic solo collections.

"It's about eight years in the making," explained the five-time Grammy Award winner. "It's got kind of a weird, multi-textural feeling to it. Some of them are kind of rock, some of them are R&B things you would normally expect. It's a very wide open kind of concept record."

Wide Open's arrival comes in the midst of McDonald's latest moment of rediscovery among a younger generation of artists — led by his recent work with bassist Thundercat, who featured McDonald and his longtime friend Kenny Loggins on his recent Drunk LP. He'll take advantage of the increased attention with a run of summer and fall solo dates that includes an appearance on PBS' Soundstage as well as a stop at Carnegie Hall.
