A Rose By Any Other Name

In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Juliet asks,

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

The question is asked in Act 2, Scene 2. Juliet's standing on her balcony. Romeo Montague is lurking below and overhears her.

Juliet is waxing philosophical, trying to justify her romance with Romeo. She knows his name does, in fact, mean something, to her family at least.
