Grand Junction Rockies Season Has Been Canceled

We were hoping for Grand Junction Rockies baseball this summer, but it's not going to happen.

While Major League Baseball continues with plans to start the season, all minor league baseball seasons have officially been canceled, and that means no Rockies baseball in Grand Junction.

The official statement from the GJ Rockies said:

We will be reaching out to all of our season ticket holders, sponsors, and groups that have booked dates with us this year to discuss the options moving forward.

While the announcement is not necessarily unexpected, up until now there was at least a glimmer of hope that minor league baseball would be played this year. The global coronavirus pandemic has had a tremendous impact on the sports world over the past few months including professional and college sports, and at the high school level.

Moving forward, uncertainty abounds regarding the viability and feasibility of conducting team sports. While professional sports leagues are preparing to move on without fans in the stands and will generate television revenue, minor league baseball does not have that luxury. It is one of many sports that are funded by fans in the stands, and without fans there can be no baseball.

It is disappointing to the Grand Junction community, which has embraced the Rockies since they moved to the Grand Valley. Thousands of fans have made GJ Rockies baseball a summer tradition and now will be looking for other forms of entertainment over the next several weeks.

At this point, the GJ Rockies expect to be back in action next year. They closed out their official announcement by saying "We will see you all in 2021." We really do hope that happens.
