They're back. They were there, and then they weren't. It seems one of the "signs of the times" will ultimately prove to be as perennial as the leaves on a tree. The next time you're at a Grand Junction grocery store on the box store, look down.

We posted about this back in mid-April, and it blew up. Grand Junction grocery stores had placed "One Way" signs on the floors. Customers were being directed to observe signs indicating which direction traffic was to proceed down individual aisles. Remembering to follow the signs took a little getting used to, but it eventually caught on.

Right about the time we all got used to following the direction signs, they mysteriously disappeared. By early July they were gone. In a way, it signaled things might be returning to normal, whatever "normal" maybe.

Well, as of my trip to the Orchard Mesa City Market on Sunday, August 9, I noticed the signs had returned. It seems some shoppers, though, hadn't noticed the "One Way" signs. When it comes to following the signs, if one were to assign a grade, most shoppers would receive a resounding F minus. Hardly anyone followed the signs. It's hard to tell if this was because shoppers didn't see them, or due to overwhelming apathy.

I do know the failure to observe "One Way" direction signs resulted in a verbal brawl last week at the North Avenue Walmart. Following a minor collision between shopping carts, a few F-bombs were dropped, followed by the exclamation, "Go polish the wheels on your house." It appears these traffic directions are not to be taken lightly.

I'm curious... whose job is it to put these stickers on the floor? Who on the City Market payroll has the prestigious honor of sticking these signs on the floor, taking them off, and then having to put them down again. This is rapidly turning into a full-time gig.

The next time you embark on a shopping adventure in Grand Junction, pay attention to your surroundings. There may be "One Way" signs on the floor then again, there might not. For the time being, we'll all be heading down the frozen pizza aisle on a case by case basis.
