Food Review: Breakfast Comes to Grand Junction Wendy’s
There's a new player at the breakfast table in Grand Junction.
Wendy's restaurants have entered the fast-food breakfast race and curiosity got the best of me this weekend. I had to give it a try and tell you what I discovered.
The first thing I can tell you is that the Wendy's breakfast menu is pretty typical of the fast food offerings from the other top burger chains, McDonald's and Burger King. Breakfast sandwiches dominate the menu coming on a bun, biscuit, or croissant.
For starters I had to try the Baconator- bacon, sausage, egg, and cheese on a bun. That is a lot of meat on a breakfast sandwich and it wasn't bad, although I wasn't crazy about the cheese.
We also tried the chicken biscuit...a breaded chicken patty on a biscuit with no egg and no cheese. The biscuit was a bit crumbly, but the chicken was good. I'd be inclined to add some ranch dressing, and some people might like it with mayo.
On day 2 we started with the maple bacon croissant, which comes with bacon and cheese. This was by far my least favorite selection of the weekend. Apparently, I am not a maple bacon fan. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but I was not expecting the bacon to be lathered in what appeared to be maple syrup. Maple syrup is great on pancakes- not so much on bacon and chicken.
Finally, we tried the sausage, egg, and Swiss croissant. This was a pretty good sandwich, although I'm not sold on the idea of Swiss cheese on a breakfast sandwich.
A pleasant surprise on the Wendy's breakfast menu was the seasoned fries. They are a little thicker than regular french fries and they are crispy and nicely seasoned.
For desert, we tried the fresh baked oatmeal bar and it was actually pretty good. I though it had raisins, but then discovered it was blueberries and cranberries. Not bad at all.
The Wendy's breakfast menu also includes a burrito, a sausage biscuit, and sausage gravy and a biscuit, which we did not try.
The price of the combos seems pretty much in line with other fast food breakfast offerings. Two combo meals, medium-sized, with drink upgrades to orange juice( an additional 70 cents) was just under $15.50.
Here's the bottom line. I can't say that my inaugural experience with Wendy's breakfast blew me away. But, it was good enough that I will be back someday to try some of the things I didn't get this weekend.
Wendy's has got some tough competition from the likes of McDonald's, Burger King, and Chick-Fil-A and it's likely gonna take time for the breakfast eating public to get used to the idea of breakfast at Wendy's. They may never get the biggest piece of the breakfast pie, but they are sure going to try to at least get a piece.
