I moved to Colorado from North Carolina and I think it's safe to say that our winter just doesn't measure up to Colorado's. I went to college in the Appalachian Mountains and the majority of my time traveling in the snow -- was on foot.

My friend keeps mentioning to "make sure you always have a blanket and water with you," which is something I've never brought with me, or even thought to bring with me. I think I have a first aid kit in my car and that's about it. Bring the first aid kit and these winter car essentials.

    Water

You should have at least three gallons of water with you in car, at all times. That's about a gallon of water per day. Just remember that this water needs to be changed about every six months depending on the expiration date.

    Blanket

You could toss a blanket that you almost forgot about in your car or bring your favorite Green Bay Packers (or Denver Broncos) blanket with you. This blankie could keep your warm or give you some shelter from the sun.

    Jumper Cables

Unlocking your car, getting in, and not being to start it, is a pretty bad feeling. A set of jumper cables can go a long way and can get you out of a bad, cold place.

    First Aid Kit

This is pretty much the only thing I had in my car as far as preparation goes. First aid kits even come with a guide to aid you through!

    Scraper

I used to have one of these, but I'm not sure where it is right now. You definitely need a scraper for winter in Colorado!

    Shovel

You never know if you're going to end up in a snowbank and have to dig yourself out. Leave a small shovel in your trunk, just in case.

    Kitty Litter

I'm not just putting this on the list because I have some at my house, but because it works the best in the winter. Kitty litter is better than salt because it gives you a better grip and won't rust your car.

    Tire Chains

It took me by surprise that tire chains are required in some areas in Colorado from September through May. I've never owned a set but I'm about to!

    Flash Light

My night vision is not the best, but this is where a flash light comes in handy! I would even bring some extra batteries with you too.

    Phone Battery

Whether you bring a pre-charged portable charger or an extra phone battery, you won't regret it. Phones come in handy for entertainment, and a flashlight, but when you really need it, they can be used to get help.
