The question comes up every time we have to change all of the clocks in the house like we have to this weekend. Why can't we keep Daylight Saving Time all year?

Lots of Opinions

Like everything else in society, there are varied opinions about whether or not keeping Daylight Saving Time all year long is a good idea or not. There are perfectly legitimate and valid reasons on both sides of the discussion.

Pros and Cons

One of the biggest arguments against keeping DST all year long is a safety issue that relates to school kids going to school in the dark. On the other side of the coin is the idea that falling back for the winter makes the day seem so short and the evening feels so long because it gets dark so early.

An Act of Congress

What you may not realize is that states do not have the option of implementing Daylight Saving Time year-round. They can opt out of having DST, as Arizona and Hawaii have done, but, it would take an act of Congress to make DST the law of the land all year long. According to almanac.com, 19 states have passed legislation to enact DST year round - but nothing can happen until there is an amendment to the federal law.
