A pair of cyclists had a terrifying experience last Wednesday when on a bike ride, they were met with seemingly random gunfire and were forced to take cover.

The incident occurred around 7 pm on the popular trail Flash of Gold, located on Buffalo Pass just northeast of Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

The two men, Cole Sibelius and Riley Schumm bailed from their bicycles and took shelter behind a pine tree and a rock, respectively. The men tried yelling at the shooters to stop but they apparently couldn't hear them.

The shooters consisted of three men, allegedly visiting from out of state, and had an encounter with a deputy before Sibelius and Schumm could tell authorities what had happened, but the shooters were dismissed without being issued citations. However, the deputy did end up issuing court summonses for the shooters after hearing the story from the cyclists' point of view.

In addition, upon talking with the shooters, the deputy had determined that the men had been drinking which, in Colorado, alcohol and firearms do not mix. In fact, to be in possession of a firearm while under the influence is illegal, and can carry a penalty of a $1,000 fine and a year in jail.

From what I can tell, these men were not intentionally shooting at the cyclists but were definitely not practicing safe gun practices. A stray bullet could have easily hurt or killed either or both of the cyclists in a tragic accident. Luckily, neither of the men was hurt but this story could have ended up much, much worse.
