Colorado Man, 20, Sentenced to 2 Months Jail Time for Crash Killing 6 Year Old
Mauricio Lozano Gonzalez, a 20-year-old Colorado man, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to careless driving resulting in the death of a 6-year-old child.
He was sentenced to one year in jail for the accident, but will only be incarcerated for 60 days unless he violates his probation.
Gonzalez was driving in a Breckenridge mobile home park back in April and was going about 8 mph when he hit a 6-year-old boy riding a bike. He stayed at the scene and even drove the child to the hospital.
KKTV 11 reports that investigators believe Gonzalez was not driving in a careless manner at the time of the incident, but was most likely distracted by a phone call and was unable to see the boy due to a hat left on the car's dashboard.
The 6-year-old's mother requested that the court level the maximum allowable sentence, in spite of Gonzalez's mother making her own plea on behalf of her son.
KKTV 11 reports that Gonzalez's mother said, "He’s a young man that just started to live his life. ... He is a very different person compared to the one he was before the accident. Since that moment, we’ve been there for him, and we’ve been praying for both families. We’re all devastated."
Because of the lack of speed the prosecution, defense and judge all agreed that the crash was an unfortunate accident and that the maximum sentence was unnecessary.
