The Colorado Avalanche wrapped up the lockout-shortened season with a 3-1 loss to Minnesota on Saturday night and on Sunday Joe Sacco was fired as head coach. The Avalanche never really got on track this year and missed the playoffs for the third straight season. Sacco had one year left on his deal and lead Colorado to a 130-134-30 record in his four seasons.

GM Greg Sherman said in a release "Joe has worked for this franchise for eight seasons and he is a dedicated and hard-working coach. We appreciate all he has done and wish him the best in the future." I don’t think this is the last front office move the Avalanche will make. They have a young team with a lot of skill, but Sacco could never get this team to play on the road like they did at home. In today’s NHL if you take care of business at home and can play .500 or little better on the road you should make the playoffs. The Avalanche couldn’t make that happen. The search for Sacco’s replacement will start soon, I would think once a few teams get knocked out of this years tournament they will start looking.
