A six-month-old baby from Utah just set the record for the youngest child to water-ski. As you can imagine, not everyone is happy about it. Check out the video and see just how this little guy rolls.

The video above was taken at Lake Powell. That's six-month-old Rich Humpherys owning an interest water-ski setup. The Humpherys family from St. George, Utah, posted a photo on video on Instagram earlier this week.

Growing up in Grand Junction, one of the popular pastimes of the 1970s and early '80s was water-skiing. We didn't always go to Lake Powell. The Colorado River, Gunnison River, even Highline Lake worked just fine. I've known a few people to ski the area canals. Oddly, even though my family did this frequently, I never learned how.

Is it normal for a six-month-old to water-ski? Not hardly. According to WebMD, these are a few skills a baby should acquire by six months:

  • Start to sit up on their own
  • Should be able to roll from back on to stomach and vice versa
  • Some babies can propel themselves around the floor, sliding on their tummies
  • Sleep six to eight hours
  • Begin passing objects from one hand to the other
  • Bounce while in a standing position
  • Begins to string vowel sounds together when "talking," such as "eh, oh, and ah"

The list above reads like me on one of my good days. Just the same, water-skiing at six months really raises the bar for babies.

As you might expect, some comments on this video are not supportive of the parents. The video is taking heat from critics who don't appreciate the parents' actions.

One user stated:

That baby looks TERRIFIED!!!!! Child services should be investigating this as it's putting the babies (sic) life in danger. If anyone thinks this it's okay, um no it isn't. This is child is so fragile and if he falls off, he could sustain permanent injuries. Look at how the babies (sic) back is severely curved. How about the head injury when he loses his balance and falls and hits his head??? How about the under developed muscles in the baby's arms, back, neck and shoulders possibly being torn??

On the other hand, there are a number of very supportive comments in the same thread. One user stated:

Before I watched the video and then read the comments, I thought oh here comes the comments on how we should put our kids in a rubber padded rooms.
My kids are doing things on a regular basis, way ahead of the curve of life and their friends watch, wonder, and loath wishing that their parents weren’t still treating them like toddlers. Life is short, grab it by the horns, keep yours eyes where the trail meets the sky. Don’t be scared, just enjoy your ride.

What is the father's take on the situation? According to Denver 7's webpage, he was quoted as saying, "Take one look at this kid and tell me he isn’t having the time of his life! Such a little stud!"
