It's officially October, and this weekend is no different when it comes to being filled with community events. Here's what's coming up this weekend:

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4

  • Zippity Do Dogs AKC Dog Show will take place at the Park Complex of the Mesa County Fairgrounds, 2785 U.S. Highway 50 in Grand Junction. For more information and times, call 255-7100.
  • JC Productions will host a gun show in the Community Building of the Mesa County Fairgrounds, 2785 U.S. Highway 50 in Grand Junction. Doors open at 4:00 p.m., and admission is $5 per adult.
  • The Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture is hosting an art reception at City Hall, 250 North 5th Street in Grand Junction. The event is scheduled from 5:50 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and will feature canvas paintings by Katie Hill, a photography exhibit by Linda Love, and much more. For more information, call 254-3866.
  • The Raw Canvas will host an Art Opening & Costume Ball from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Raw Canvas, 507 Main Street in Grand Junction. The event will feature artwork from 20 local artists.   • The Art Center will host its First Friday event from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Art Center, 1803 North 7th Street in Grand Junction. During the event, the Art Center will kick off three new exhibits.   • For a head start on the Halloween haunting season, the Express All-Stars will open their annual Trail of Terror Haunted House at 721 South 7th Street in Grand Junction (across from the Daily Sentinel). Event will be open from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight.
  • The beloved 1970s pop culture phenomenon and Saturday morning cartoon series Schoolhouse Rock comes to life on the musical stage. Colorado Mesa University’s Theater Department is presenting “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” at 7:30 p.m. at CMU’s Robinson Theater, 1100 North Avenue in Grand Junction. With clever songs that taught history, grammar, math, science and politics to a generation, this family-friendly musical is considered good, clean and educational fun. The event is rated G. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $6 for students.
  • Colorado Mesa University’s Music Department will present its piano faculty and special guest Alejandro Cremaschi in concert at 7:30 p.m. in the recital hall of the Moss Performing Arts Center, 1100 North Avenue in Grand Junction. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for students.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5

  • The Housing and Building Association of Northwestern Colorado is presenting the 32nd Annual Parade of Homes in Grand Junction. This is a self-guided tour of quality designed and built homes in Western Colorado. Tours will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tour maps are given at the time tickets are purchased. Tickets are $10 and are available at all City Market locations in Grand Junction and Fruita.
  • Tour of the Moon Cycling Classic is scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m. on the Colorado National Monument. The event is considered one of the premier recreational road rides in the western United States. For more information, visit www.tourofthemoon.com
  • The CSU Extension Office will present their 16TH Annual Master Gardeners’ Tree Auction & Plant Sale from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Mesa County Fairgrounds, 2775 Highway 50 in Grand Junction.   • The Junior Service League of Grand Junction will present the annual Breast Cancer Walk 4 Life event at Mesa Mall, 2424 Highway 6 & 50 in Grand Junction. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. at the entrance between Cabela’s and J.C. Penney’s, followed by an opening ceremony and 5K (3-mile) walk at 8:00 a.m.

  • Infinity Event Designs, Elks Club, Lincoln OM Lions, and the German American Club are sponsoring the annual Oktoberfest from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. at 6th Street and Colorado Avenue in Grand Junction. Celebrate the German culture and heritage with food, beer, wine, music, entertainment, a yard sale of German things, and free street dancing.   • The Colorado West Marching Band Festival takes place at two different locations in Grand Junction. The festival kicks off with a parade at 10:00 a.m. The parade will begin at 4th and Main Streets, and continue down Main Street. Then at 12:30 p.m., high school marching bands will participate in a competition at Stocker Stadium. Awards will be presented at 5:00 p.m.
  • Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church will host its annual Greek Festival from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the church, 3585 North 12th Street in Grand Junction. Activities include Greek food and pastries, coffee shop, silent auction, kids games, church tours, traditional Greek dancers, and much more. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Grand Valley Catholic Outreach and Good Samaritan Clinic.
  • The Art Center will host an art workshop titled “Paint Your Personality” from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Art Center, 1803 North 7th Street in Grand Junction.   • The Community Hospital Foundation Board will have its 20th Annual Gala at Colorado Mesa University’s University Center Ballroom.   • Classes Clinking Glasses – which is a reunion for all Grand Valley Area classes from 1990 to 1999 – will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Clarion Inn, 755 Horizon Drive in Grand Junction. Anyone and everyone who graduated between 1990 and 1999 from Central, Grand Junction, Fruita Monument, and Palisade High Schools are invited to attend this event. The evening will include hors d’oeuvres, beer & wine, cash bar, casino tables, dancing, karaoke, and much more. Tickets at the door are $75 for couples and $40 for singles.
