For the longest time, I’ve had this curiosity about how certain food companies come up with the various flavors for their products.

I know a lot of research goes into the final decision. Still, it amazes me how the companies figure which flavors they think will ultimately do well, especially considering the success and failure rates of some products.

Kellogg’s Pop-tarts are no exception. According to news stories from Zacks (via Yahoo!) and Web Pro News, Kellogg Company this week introduced new flavors of Pop-Tarts. The new Pop-Tarts Gone Nutty! will come in two new flavors – Peanut Butter and Frosted Chocolate Peanut Butter.

Granted, I’m a big fan of peanut butter, especially when it’s mixed with chocolate. So, it should be interesting how the new flavor of Pop-Tarts will turn out.

According to the Zacks news story, the Peanut Butter Pop-Tarts contains real peanut butter at the center and has sugar crystals on the outside. The report also states that peanut butter is a very popular flavor and is expected to appeal to teens.

As for the Frosted Chocolate Peanut Butter, it will contain a chocolate pastry crust and sweet frosting.

According to Web Pro News, the new additions will come in gold-foil wrappers in an orange box to distinguish them from the other flavors, most likely so that parents can avoid food allergies.

Web Pro News also reports that this is the second time Pop-Tarts have introduced a peanut flavor, In 1986 the Kellogg Company introduced a peanut butter-and-jelly version, which did not do so well.

No word yet on whether the new flavors will be a permanent addition to the line or if it’s a limited-time item. Some limited edition flavors are rolling out this week, which includes Wild Berry Bloom and Red Velvet.
