The Great American Campout begins this weekend (June 27) in Colorado and continues until September 7th.Colorado Parks & Wildlife and the National Wildlife Federation are sponsoring the 11th Great American Campout, encouraging people to camp - and to raise funds for wildlife in the process.

The state of Colorado manages 42 state parks with more than 4000 campsites, including primitive sites as well as those with full hook-ups. Many of the campsites can be reserved on-line.

The Great American Campout intends to get everyone to pledge to camp this year - and raise funds for wildlife. The National Wildlife Federation will donate $1- up to $100,000 -for every pledge made.The money helps protect the outdoors, wildlife, and habitat.

Western Colorado campers don't have to go far to find some great camping with Highline Lake, James M. Robb Colorado River State Park , Vega State Park, and Sweitzer Lake close by.
