It's been said 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away', but what about the mortician? Cyanide is a killer, and apple seeds contain cyanide, so it would seem that eating an entire apple could lead to an untimely death.

Most people who eat apples, go down to the core and then toss the rest. It's been estimated that throwing away the core results in a 30% waste of our apples That means we are only getting about 60% of the potential nutritional value of a single apple.

As we all know, apples are packed with nutrients. According to medicaldaily.com, apples contain vitamin A, C, E, and beta carotene all of which can help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and asthma, plus act as a teeth cleaner, killing bacteria in the mouth. There's other research that suggests eating apples can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's and stroke.

But, what about those cyanide laced apple seeds?

The article at medicaldaily.com  says, yes, eating too many apple seeds could be dangerous but the level of cyanide in each seed is very low. So, no, eating an apple core won't kill you, but eating 100 apple cores might. It's  been suggested that the small amount of cyanide in the apple seeds might even act as a cancer killing agent in healthy cells.

So this week, I ate my very first apple core, and you know, it was okay. Eating the seeds does take a little getting used to I must admit, but it wasn't bad.(although I don't think I want seeds in my apple sauce)

Another tip to help you  get "over" the idea of eating the core, is to eat the apple from the bottom up, rather than attack it from the side as we traditionally do.

Eating more of the apple means better health, and less waste. And, no, it's not gonna kill you. Take a look at this video showing the "new" way to eat an apple.
