Reports broke this weekend that a deal between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs for the services of QB Alex Smith is all but done. The deal can not be finalized until the start of the league season, which is March 12th. In week 10 of this season Alex Smith went down with a concussion, which led to Colin Kaepernick taking over the starting job in San Francisco and leading the 49ers to the Super bowl.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been looking for a starting QB for a while now. A couple of season ago they made a deal for Matt Cassel, he was a bust, the last few games this year they had former Denver QB Brady Quinn under center but Quinn doesn't seem to be the answer. So, the Chiefs will look to score a starting QB from San Francisco again. The last time they did that it was guy named Joe Montana.
When Smith went down he was leading the NFL in completion percentage, which is the number I think is most important when grading a QB in the NFL. I think Smith would be a good fit in Kansas City, the Chiefs have a running game and they guys who can get down field and catch a pass. If this deal goes through I see the AFC west being a three-dog race between Denver, San Diego and Kansas City, Sorry Raiders fans but Oakland has too many items to fix to make that jump this season.
The Chiefs have the number one over all pick in years NFL draft, if the Smith deal happens look for Kansas City to take a left -tackle with that pick. I like Luke Joeckel from Texas A&M, he is a big strong kid and the Chiefs will need to protect Smith’s blind side if they want to make sort of run in the AFC next season.
