The Apostle Island Sea Caves of Lake Superior might just be the best thing there is about winter.

The fact that I hate winter might be the Grand Valley's worst kept secret, but seeing these sea caves and ice formations has given me a new appreciation for the artistry of Old Man Winter.

Visiting these Wisconsin caves  in the winter requires a two-mile hike (round trip) across Lake Superior, which can be a dangerous proposition any time of the  year. But, those that venture out are rewarded with the experience of a lifetime.

According to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore website, nature has carved "delicate arches, vaulted chambers, and honeycombed passageways into cliffs." Though I can't stand the thought of being cold, these ice formations are so intriguing I am ready to put on my hiking shoes and scarf.

People visit the sea caves in summer and winter to see the ever changing landscape, but the winter view has to be the most spectacular. I've never considered the state of Wisconsin to be a vacation destination...but, my perspective has suddenly changed.
