When it’s as cold as it’s been in Western Colorado for as long as it’s been cold, I start looking for ANY sign that spring is drawing closer. It helps my frame of my mind, and gives me hope that we aren’t going to be stuck in the deep freeze forever. Viola! Here’s the first sign that spring is on the way. It’s time for baseball!  Are you kidding me??

Although the Western Colorado ground is covered with snow, the Colorado Mesa University baseball team begins practice tomorrow. And as well they should. The first game of the season is just three weeks away on February 1st  in La Jolla, California (where, by the way, today's high temperature is expected to be in the 60s) against highly respected UC - San Diego. The Mavericks hope to play their first game of the season at Suplizio Field on February 15th against Montana State University- Billings.

The Mavericks are coming off yet another outstanding season  under head coach Chris Hanks, winning the RMAC Championship, and advancing to the NCAA Central Region Tournament for the eighth time in 9 years.

We may not be extremely close to having baseball weather, but we are getting close to baseball. And until the weather allows them to get outside, the Mavericks will practice in the Maverick Pavilion.
