Warner’s New Streaming Service Will Be the Exclusive Online Home of ‘Doctor Who’
HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service, announced today a major acquisition that could grab at least a few sci-fi fans’ attention: The site will soon be the exclusive streaming home of the modern version of Doctor Who.
From the press release:
All 11 seasons of the British sci-fi hit drama will be available on WarnerMedia’s streaming service at launch in spring 2020, marking the SVOD premiere of season 11. As part of HBO Max’s new long-term deal with BBC Studios, the streamer will also be the exclusive SVOD home for future seasons after they air on BBC AMERICA.
In addition to all 11 seasons of Doctor Who from 2005 through the present, HBO Max has also licensed some 700 episodes of other British TV series, including The Office, Luther, and Top Gear. Warners previously announced that the streaming service will feature new original series like Dune: The Sisterhood, and be the exclusive streaming home of all 236 episodes of Friends. Supposedly, HBO Max will launch with 10,000 hours of available content from HBO, The CW, Cartoon Network, DC Comics, and more.
Will this be enough to compete with Netflix and Hulu and who knows how many other streaming services? We’ll see when HBO Max debuts in the spring of 2020.
