We've all seen the memes on social media: At this point, what else could possibly go wrong in 2020?

Locusts?

This year has been tough for many Americans, including many here in Mesa County. Our local nonprofits have risen to the occasion, continuing to provide support for families who need a helping hand, those who need access to additional education, and those who need a little help so they can remain self-reliant.

If you're thinking about making donations to local nonprofits this year, here's something to consider: A donation to United Way of Mesa County will benefit several local organizations that are awarded grants by a special panel of 60-80 local volunteers. As United Way leaders explain, "these panels review the grant applications from the agencies and make on-site visits to help determine which programs are most effective and efficient at delivering services our community needs."

Programs funded by United Way of Mesa County help about 50,000 people in our community.

Last year, our local United Way raised $905,994, with much of that coming from workplace campaigns that often offer convenient payroll deductions. This year, they want to top that by raising $1 million.

If your company doesn't do a workplace campaign but would like to learn more about starting one, check out all the online resources here. Similarly, if you're ready to donate now, you can get started online here. Let's all do our part to keep Mesa County residents healthy and self-sufficient!
