It's that time of year again, and leaves are falling all over the valley. Fortunately, Grand Junction has an annual residential leaf pick-up program. Here's how it works.

Starting right about now (October 15) a total of four vacuum trucks and two street sweepers will begin making their way through town. Cleanup operations will continue, weather permitting, through mid-December.

How do you participate? Simply rake your leaves into a pile on the street. Keep leaves at least 18-inches from the curb so water can continue to flow down the gutters. What if you don't have a curb or gutter on your street? In that case, you are asked to rake leaves on the pavement in front of your residence.

What sections of Grand Junction does this program serve? According to the City of Grand Junction's official webpage, this program is for single-family residences within the city limits of Grand Junction. The city has been divided into five different regions, with leaf rake-out dates assigned for each section. The city's webpage provides a detailed map of the areas included and their assigned pick-up dates.

The City of Grand Junction's leaf pickup brochure has a helpful list of dos and don'ts:

  • Do have leaf piles on the street by 7 a.m. on your scheduled rake-out dates
  • Do place piles 15-feet away from objects such as cars, boats, trailers, etc.
  • Do Not mix limbs, logs, brush, dirt, vines, weeds or other vegetation, and/or wood, rocks, lumber, bricks, metal, or concrete into your leaf pile
  • Do Not park on leaves
  • Do Not let leaves get soaked
  • Do Not set out bagged leaves

Put simply, they pick up leaves, and only leaves, preferably dry.

What if you have other items such as tree limbs, lawn clippings, bagged leaves, or even pallets or untreated lumber? Don't forget about the Mesa County Landfill Organic Material Compost Facility at 3071 Highway 50. You can deposit those materials at the facility year round free of charge. Heads up - for the time being, the compost facility is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

This is an excellent program for the residents of Grand Junction. I live far outside city limits, so I don't get to take advantage of this service. Then again, I don't have any deciduous trees. In the end, this program keeps the city looking beautiful and prevents leaves from clogging storm-water inlets. Put it to good use.
