What do you get when you cross an accordionist with a clarinetist? Ultimately, you get one of the most successful rock and roll bands in history - although the accordion and the clarinet had to go. Dennis DeYoung ditched the accordion for the organ and piano, and James "JY" Young traded his clarinet playing for a guitar, and together they formed the backbone of Styx, which brings it's current tour to Colorado this month.

Styx' biggest hits in the 70s and 80s featured the powerful vocals of Dennis DeYoung on songs like Babe, Lady, Come Sail Away, and The Best of Times. DeYoung produced the band's four consecutive multi-platinum albums and was the driving force behind the highly popular concept albums and tours Paradise Theater and Kilroy Was Here.

That was then, and this is now.  DeYoung and his band mates parted ways more than 10 years ago. Though the band has failed to match it's album success of earlier years, the band has remained wildly popular and has toured actively over the last 14 years. According to the Styx website, where, by the way,  you won't find any mention of Dennis DeYoung, the band has had more live performances since 1999 than in all the previous years of its career combined.

Lawrence Gowan took DeYoung's place in 1999 and continues to provide a DeYoung-like vocal sound to the band, complimenting Styx mainstais JY Young, and Tommy Shaw.

Styx will be in concert on August 18th at Hudson Gardens in Littleton. You can register to win a pair of tickets to the concert here on the KOOL 107.9 website.
