Sometimes the best approach is the most direct approach.

Most businesses in the Grand Valley have signs on the door that say something like "Mask Required to Enter." Obviously, not everyone is complying, but it seems like most people are, whether they agree with the policy or not.

Some businesses have a person at the door making sure everyone is complying with the facemask order - and handing out masks to those who don't have one. I always feel sorry for this person because they have to deal with the people who want to be defiant and want to argue with the person who is simply doing the job they are being paid to do.

Then I saw this sign on the door of a Grand Valley business. I initially ignored the sign thinking it said something like "no shirt, no shoes no service." I've been seeing those kinds of signs for decades, but they never apply to me because I can assure you, I'm not leaving my house without wearing a shirt and a pair of shoes. But, no, this sign took things a step further. NO SHIRT, NO SHOES, NO MASK, NO SERVICE. And then it went on to state "We appreciate not having to be confrontational."

There are a couple of things I like about this sign.

For one thing, the sign sends a clear and direct message. It saves one poor employee from having to face a few angry customers who insist on remaining mask-free- and taking out their displeasure on the unfortunate employee. Sometimes dealing with the public can be extremely difficult and these poor souls have the unenviable task of being the enforcer.

The other thing I like about it is that while the business is sending a clear message to customers about expectations - it's done in sort of a light-hearted way. It doesn't sound mean and nasty and unnecessarily harsh. We have enough anger in the world without making our signs sound angry. I have to give two thumbs to this creative no-mask sign.

By the way, the name of the business with the interesting sign is Ace Hardware, in the Coronado Plaza in Clifton. Good job, Ace!
