Today (May 12) is National Odometer Day and people brag about how many miles they've been able to drive their car. But, it's a good bet it isn't even close to the record set by Irv Gordon and his Volvo in 2013.

Gordon reached the landmark mileage in September of that year hitting three million miles on his 1966 Volvo P1800S. Gordon bought the car new and enjoys driving it so much, he just keeps on going.

When Gordon turned his first million miles in 1987, Volvo gave him a new car, but he continued to drive his classic Volvo.

By 2002, Gordon had driven the car another million miles for a total of two million and a Guinness World Record, but he didn't stop there.

Since hitting the three million mile mark, Gordon has driven an additional 100,000 miles and has set a goal of 3,190,000 miles, which is one-and-a-half times the original world record he broke.

As for the odometer, the concept of measuring distance is at least 2,300 years old. The modern odometer is generally credited to William Clayton, whose roadometer first used in 1847 measured distance in quarter, whole and 10 mile units.
