A local Girl Scout is hoping to influence healthy food choices among low-income families with her vegetable container gardening kit project.

Girl Scout Ambassador Kyra TerLouw, of Grand Junction, partnered with the Grand Junction Community Food Bank to provide vegetable container gardening kits to their clients. The idea is to help struggling families obtain healthy produce at low or minimal cost, and also to teach their kids about good nutrition.

Each of the kits contains soil, seeds, nutritional information, and a "how-to" brochure. Kyra created the brochure after experimenting with container gardening. She says the container gardens are "suitable for a variety of plants and can be grown on a window sill, a front porch, or balcony, making them suitable for many types of living environments and easy for families to use."

This gardening project is part of Kyra's efforts to earn the Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouts. Her efforts could definitely help low-resource families get on a path to more independent and healthful living. This could be the "jump-start" that some may need.
