Kevin Smith’s Oddball Religious Comedy ‘Dogma’ Turns 20
Kevin Smith's 1999 comedy Dogma celebrates its 20th anniversary today. Dogma is the fourth installment in Smith's View Askewniverse series, a fictional cinematic universe that revolves around the same characters, specifically the duo of Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (played by Smith himself).
It follows two fallen angels — played by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon — who find a loophole in Catholic dogma that they believe will allow them to return to heaven. The catch? Since existence is based on the principle that God is never wrong, proving him false will undo all creation and humanity will cease to exist. Oh yeah, and Alanis Morissette plays the role of God.
Dogma's cast also includes stars such as Chris Rock, the late George Carlin, and the late Alan Rickman.
Even before its release, the movie caused an uproar among several Catholic groups, leading to protests, accusations of blasphemy, and even death threats to Smith. That hasn't stopped Dogma from becoming somewhat of a cult classic, even if a sequel won't be happening any time soon.
Those of you looking to revisit the irreverent fantasy comedy will have some trouble. The movie isn't available digitally, due to the fact that Bob and Harvey Weinstein personally own the rights and refuse to give them back to Smith. Currently, the only way to watch Dogma is by snagging a DVD copy.
