Hunter S. Thompson Had Strong Colorado Ties

Though he grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, Hunter S. Thompson spent much of his adult life at his home just north of Aspen, Colorado, at his home in Woody Creek that he called 'Owl Farm.'

Thompson was known to frequent nearby Woody Creek Tavern and even unsuccessfully ran for Sheriff of Aspen in 1970 under the 'Freak Power' ticket.

Thompson was a journalist and wrote for huge publications, including Rolling Stone, Playboy, and ESPN, to name a few.

He was also portrayed by Johnny Depp in two semi-autobiographical films based on his writings, and Bill Murray in another.

Hunter S. Thompson's Death + Funeral in Colorado

Thompson passed away on February 20, 2005, from what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 67.

The incident and subsequent funeral, which featured his ashes being shot out of a cannon and was attended by celebrities like Johnny Depp, Bill Murray, and Johnny Depp, all took place at his Owl Farm compound.

Colorado Resident + Author Hunter S. Thompson's Death to Be Reviewed

Over two decades after his passing, Thompson is again making headlines after his widow, Anita, requested that his death be reviewed by authorities.
