What Does The Law Say In Colorado?
Colorado's two-plate requirement is spelled out in Colorado Revised Statutes, Title 42 (Vehicles and Traffic 42-3-202). This statute says any self-propelled vehicle other than a motorcycle needs to have both a front and rear license plate.
Driving With One License Plate in Colorado
Driving with just one license plate on a car registered in Colorado is a Class B Infraction. Driving with one or both of your license plates obscured or covered in mud is also a Class B infraction. If you happen to be driving with just one plate and your sticker is expired, now you are looking at a Class A violation with a cost of $100 or more.
What States Require Front License Plates?
Along with Colorado, the states that require you to display a tag on the front of your vehicle include California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
What States Only Require One License Plate?
Hats off to the rugged states that only require one license plate. Unlike Colorado, this includes Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
