What’s New in 2025: Mosquito Trends
West Nile Virus has already been reported in Arapahoe County for 2025, which could mean a rough mosquito season ahead for our state.
In Mesa County, Colorado, officials have identified evidence of Aedes aegypti, a mosquito species known for transmitting diseases like yellow fever and dengue.
If new mosquito species are identified in the state this summer, it could mean even higher disease transmission rates.
Resources for Western Colorado
Thankfully, one of Colorado's best resources for mosquito surveillance is here in Grand Junction. The Grand River Mosquito Control District tracks mosquito populations and control measures in Mesa County that you can follow at GRMCD.ORG.
Vector Disease Control International oversees state-wide mosquito control, including spraying for adult mosquitoes. Early this season, VDCI is already active in Boulder and Grand Counties.

Prevention Tips: Protecting Yourself
Repellents: Protect your family from mosquitoes with EPA-approved repellents that use DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
Clothing: When mosquitoes are active, wear long-sleeved shirts and jeans to protect yourself. Mosquitoes are especially vicious on the Grand Mesa in May, June, and July.
Home and Yard Maintenance: Flower pots, birdbaths, and gutters are all places mosquitoes love to breed. Make sure these areas are cleaned and kept dry.
