Prom season is coming up fast on the Western Slope, but for so many in Grand Junction, the cost of gowns, suits, and accessories puts one of high school’s biggest nights out of reach.

We are fortunate to have organizations like Grand Junction Free Promwear stepping up to help us all turn our closets into opportunities to make prom an inclusive event. Grand Junction Free Promwear’s clothing drive is more than an event; it’s been their mission. The hundreds of items donated each year show us how much Grand Junction wants to help as well.

Following the most recent round of donations, Grand Junction Free Promwear has now collected over 650 garments. They are still accepting donations and are especially in need of larger sizes and men’s suits. Once items are dropped off, everything gets cleaned and sorted before a big giveaway event, where teens can browse and take what fits their style. No questions asked, no cost attached.

At the heart of a community event like this one, the object is about far more than outfitting prom attendees; it’s about building community goodwill. Something we need more of all over Colorado. Each gown or tuxedo is someone in Grand Junction who chooses to be generous, someone who chooses sustainability, and someone who offers belonging to another.

Volunteers continue to accept donations ahead of the giveaway, at Grand Junction Free Promwear on March 14 and 15. Students can check out the donations from 9 AM to 3 PM both days at the Career Center (2935 North Avenue, Building D), where students can select dresses, suits, and accessories at no cost.
