Bye Bye Up Charges
Dunkin' issued big news for coffee drinkers this week. They announced that customers in Colorado and Nationwide would no longer be asked to pay an additional charge to substitute milk for a dairy substitute such as soy, oat, or almond milk.
The Trouble With Trends
Dunkin closed more than 800 locations in 2020, following a claim the chain had seen a 20% dropoff in business (blamed on Covid shutdowns). Is eating the cost of expensive dairy alternatives a good choice for the struggling coffee chain?
Dunkin, who dropped the 'donuts' from their name in 2018 to focus on coffee and drinks, says that offering dairy alternatives helps them cater to 'diverse' dietary preferences.

Increased Wait Times?
As someone who spent plenty of time slinging coffee as a barista during my undergraduate days, the thing dairy alternatives do most at a coffee shop is create longer wait times for people who showed up just wanting a simple cup of coffee and a pastry (the majority of people seeking coffee outside the home).
