I am connected with a lot of different groups on Facebook. Like many in Colorado, a lot of those groups are community groups in Loveland, Fort Collins, and Greeley. The purpose of the groups is to discuss community happenings ranging from identifying snakes in a backyard to returning lost items back to their rightful owner.

It is great that we all have resources to be connected with our neighbors, however, there is one trend that reoccurs far too often.

Colorado's Big Pet Peeve

We often see kind folks on these pages trying to reunite lost driver's licenses with their owners. While the intent is admirable, posting personal information like the driver's name and address online can be risky.

Some users block out the important information and just post the photo and name. Commenters have to remind the user that their post poses a safety risk.

What You Should Do in Colorado

While we appreciate people who want to return lost items, we want to remind you that sometimes it is best to pass along lost items to law enforcement agencies and they will ensure that lost driver's licenses, purses, and other items get in the hands of the right people.

The first thing you can do is hand over the driver's license to local law enforcement. Once you hand it off they will try to find the right owner.

I lost my wallet at a music festival once and a local law enforcement agency contacted me and sent the wallet to my home.

You can also drop a wallet into a mailbox.

The USPS will send the wallet and/or driver's license to the address listed and will not charge for postage or anything of that nature. The return will be free of charge.
