Let's begin with some positive news. Auto theft is down in Colorado for 2025. A significant decrease in auto thefts in the state is a step in the right direction, especially given the 35 percent drop in vehicle thefts from 2024.
Auto Theft Has Fallen Sharply Over Three Years
The numbers are even more drastic when you compare 2025 to 2022, with a 61 percent drop in auto thefts over the course of three years. In Northern Colorado, auto theft rates from 2024 to 2025 dropped 34 percent, with a total of 1,463 thefts reported to law enforcement.

While vehicle thefts continue to drop from record highs in 2022, there is still a risk of vehicles being stolen in Colorado. Some areas are more prone to theft than others. These are the cities with the highest auto theft rates in 2025.

Colorado State Patrol tells KDVR that even though auto thefts are down in the state year over year, Colorado drivers should still be diligent with their efforts to prevent vehicles from being stolen by locking automobiles and taking keys every time they are away from their vehicles.
Simple Steps Can Reduce Theft Risk
Other measures that can be taken are to never leave your vehicle running unattended, don't keep spare keys in your care, keep your doors locked when driving or parked, keep valuables hidden from view, and other basic common sense practices that would make your vehicle less appealing to would-be thieves.
