Hug Your Cat Day – ‘Things to Do’ for Grand Junction Cat Lovers

Today, June 4, is National Hug Your Cat Day. Here are a few things Grand Junction residents can do for the Felis Domesticus in their lives.

Cat lovers can really get into this day. If you're a cat lover, you can really appreciate the warm, cozy feeling you get when you curl up on a couch or chair, and hug your cat. The only problem is, your cat will most likely only allow a brief hug before sauntering away. If your cat is a true hugger, count your blessings.

My cat has been dead for 20 years, but as I recall, she wanted nothing to do with hugs. For that matter, she didn't like being petted. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure she loathed the human race with a passion.

If you truly love cats, yours and any other cat walking the Earth, you might want to participate with these activities.

Meet the Meowing Meditation Group

The Roice-Hurst Humane Society offers a fascinating "cat mediation" group on Monday mornings. According to their official webpage:

Join us Monday mornings, from 7:15 - 7:45 in our kitten room for a guided meditation to help you start your week off right. Using the cats wandering about as a metaphor for your wandering thoughts, Jerred Endsley, an experienced meditation practitioner and instructor, will lead you in a variety of mindfulness exercises and meditations aimed at increasing awareness, reducing stress, and fostering self-compassion. Each week will consist of a different experiential meditation exercise followed by a brief time for discussion and questions. All experience levels are welcome and participants do not have to attend every session to benefit. Please wear long pants and closed toed shoes.

The part about wearing "closed toes shoes" sounds to me like very good advice.

Donate Food and Supplies to the Local Cat Shelter

CLAWS, Cat's League and Assistance of the Western Slope, a non-profit 501c3 organization, is in need of food donations.

CLAWS needs help to feed our hungry kitties. Kitten season started with a bang and we have taken in a large number of mommas and babies, as well as groups of kitties that have lost their owner or home. The kitties thank you for all you do to help them.

Shelter Break 2019

The Roice-Hurst Humane Society is hosting a "Shelter Break" this month. What is that? According to the event's webpage:

Become one of our Canine Convicts or Feline Felons and raise your bail to care for the animals that are locked up awaiting their forever homes. Raise your bail in advance to avoid lock-up at the shelter, or join our pets in their kennels on June 28 and raise your bail from the inside! Participate as an individual or a team of up to four. Challenge your friends and rivals to compete for cool prizes. Then join us for live music and a Rib City barbecue after the event!

That's three suggestions for the cat lovers out there. Personally, I think the cat meditation group sounds awesome. If I can haul myself out of bed at 6 a.m. I must just have to give it a try.

Please keep in mind June is Adopt-A-Cat Month. Why June? According to American Humane, June "marks the height of 'kitten season,' when millions of kittens are born and often end up in animal shelters."
