Hanging Lake Still Closed, Bike Path Partially Reopens

There is a measure of good news coming out of Glenwood Canyon.

Bike Path Partially Opened

The recreation path that runs along Interstate 70 is now open between Glenwood Springs and the Grizzly Creek rest area. The popular bike path that sustained major damage from the mudslides at the end of July will remain closed from Grizzly Creek to Dotsero.

The reopening of the bike path reflects the progress that has been made by CDOT crews who have been working to clear mud and debris from the path and throughout Glenwood Canyon. According to 9 News, the Grizzly Creek Rest Area is now open.

Hanging Lake Trail Still Closed

Meanwhile, the Hanging Lake trail remains closed and it doesn't look like it will be reopening anytime soon.  While the lake itself is fine, the trail has been significantly damaged and is in need of some major repairs. Examples of the damage include one bridge that has been badly twisted and another bridge that pushed hundreds of feet from where it is supposed to be.

The story is the same for the Grizzly Creek Trail and Grizzly Creek Canyon. The two areas were damaged in the storms and will remain closed until repairs can be done.

No Time Estimate For More Openings

There is no estimated time for the reopening of the hiking trails or the remainder of the bike path through the canyon. The reopening seems unlikely to happen before next spring. The best news, perhaps, is motorists have been able to get through Glenwood Canyon on I-70 while crews continue to repair damage from the mudslides.
