Dr. Monte Atkinson will conduct the first CMU mounting of Francis Poulencs’
1961 legendary Gloria on Friday, May 9th at 7:30 pm in the Moss Performing Arts
Center’s Robinson Theatre. Performing forces are the CMU Concert Choir, CMU
Symphony Orchestra, and new music education soprano soloist, Sarah Volk.

Poulenc’s monumental Gloria is considered one of the classics of 20th century
choral music. Commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation of America, the world
premiere was given by the Boston Symphony in 1961.

In addition, the Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Alejandro Gomez
Guillen and conducted by Dr. Sean Flanigan, will offer the beautiful Simple
Symphony by Benjamin Britten. This timeless piece highlights the classical and
baroque aspects of Britten's training, and features several themes that he had
written in his childhood, hence perhaps, the "Simple" title. However, inasmuch
as the themes are of a simple nature, there is great complexity and variety in
this work.

Guillen has also transcribed a choral work for the orchestra to perform in this
concert. The Alleluia by Randall Thompson is a beautiful opportunity to address
the challenges of pristine intonation, string blend and color.

Lastly, the orchestra will do an exciting, rock-based piece by conductor and
educator Kirt Mosier called Red Rhythmico. Featuring "written-out"
improvisations by the principal first and second violins as well as the first
two cellos, the piece will invite the audience join in the driving rhythm and
rock inspired sonorities.

Tickets are available at the box office by calling 970-248-1604.
