A resident was controlled burning this morning north of Grand Junction near 25 and I roads when the winds picked up causing the fire to go out of control.

The fire moved rapidly across the property and was threatening a few structures. The Grand Junction Fire Department responded and was able to get the fire under control quickly and keep the structures from any fire damage.

Please be very careful this burning season and only burn on days when the winds are non-existent and not in the forecast. There are two burn seasons each year that the permit covers - the Spring season is March 1 through May 31 and the one in Fall is September 1 through October 31. Anyone burning is required to actually have the permit with them when burning and it is only legal to burn during daylight hours and when there are no extreme fire danger situations (wind, severe drought, etc). You must also have a source of water sufficient to contain a fire if it gets out of control. You must apply for and receive a permit from the Grand Junction Fire Department before doing any open burning of properties or ditches in Mesa County.
