The Colorado Mesa Baseball Mavericks are seeking their first RMAC tournament championship since 2011 as they host the conference tourney this week at Suplizio Field. The Mavericks won the regular season title this year, as they have 7 of the previous 9 years, but that has not necessarily translated into tournament championships. Only one of those seven times(2006) did CMU also win the tournament championship. The only other tournament title during that span came in 2011 when Nebraska Kearney was the regular season champion. While it used to be the regular season champion would go on to win the conference tournament, that's just not the case any longer. Only twice in the last nine seasons has the regular season champion gone on to win the tournament.

The Mavericks went 37-10 in the regular season with a conference mark of 31-7, and a perfect 24-0 record at Suplizio Field.

The Mavericks open tournament play tonight (May 8) against Colorado School of Mines, with a record of 24-21 overall, and 22-16 in the RMAC.The Mavericks took seven of eight games from the Orediggers during the regular season, the lone loss coming in the very last game with all of the Maverick starters on the bench. CMU fans will remember last season when the Mavs won seven of eight against Mines, but then lost to the Orediggers in the opening round of the RMAC Tournament.

The other two teams competing in the conference tournament are New Mexico Highlands (31-18, 28-11) and CSU Pueblo(27-22,23-15). They square off at 3:30 this afternoon with the winner facing tonight's winner at 3:30 Friday afternoon, and the losers meeting at 12 noon. You can hear all of the CMU Maverick games on ESPN Radio 1230.
