#1 Ranked CMU Baseball Team In National Championship Tournament
Colorado Mesa University's baseball team are close to winning their first-ever national championship.
CMU, who won 50 games for only the second time in their history (50-10) and are fresh off their Super Regional wins are in Cary, N.C. will face New York Institute of Technology in their first matchup in bracket one in the tournament. The Mavs have never faced NYIT before.
Bracket two features second-seeded Tampa taking on the number seven seed, Mercyhurst while UC San Diego makes their third consecutive appearance in the finals tournament.
The Mavs are led by head coach Chris Hanks, who has coached the team for 21 years, with a record of 881-354, the most wins in the history of the program. The team is led by tournament MVP Josh Shapiro as well as Will Dixon, the NCAA saves leader and freshman Andrew Morris.
CMU reached the finals before, in 2014, but have never won the national championship. They finished as the national runners-up in 2014, losing the championship game to Southern Indiana.
Their first game in the tournament happens Saturday, June 1 in the second game of the day. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
